Mercedes Service A vs Service B: What's Actually Different

If you own a Mercedes-Benz, you'll see 'Service A' and 'Service B' alerts in your dash. Here's what each one includes, what they cost, and where to get them done right.

Mercedes ditched the old 'every 5,000 miles' approach years ago in favor of FSS (Flexible Service System) and ASSYST PLUS. Your car decides when it needs service based on how you drive — but the actual services come in two flavors: A and B.

What Service A includes

Service A is the lighter visit, usually around the 10,000-mile / 1-year mark. It covers: engine oil change with approval-rated oil (most modern models require 229.5 or 229.71), genuine oil filter, fluid level check on all systems, tire inflation and condition check, brake component check, and reset of the maintenance counter.

What Service B adds

Service B is the next visit after A — typically at 20,000 miles / 2 years. It includes everything in Service A, plus cabin filter replacement, brake fluid flush (mandatory every 2 years), and additional inspection items per model. Spark plug intervals, transmission services and other items are scheduled separately based on mileage.

Where you should have it done

Anywhere that uses the correct approval-rated oil (not generic 'European' oil), genuine or top-tier OEM filters (Mahle, Mann, Hengst, Bosch), and properly resets ASSYST PLUS. Independent specialists can do this for 30–50% less than the dealer with the same parts and procedures. Federal law (Magnuson-Moss) protects your warranty as long as the work is done correctly.
